Susan Marie Petrie, age 63, a lifelong Park Rapids, MN area resident, peacefully entered the splendor of Heaven on Thursday, August 30, 2018, at her home where she had been under the loving care of her husband and children.
Sue was born on October 22, 1954, to Myren and Bertha (Buckingham) Kiefert at St. Joseph Hospital in Park Rapids. She attended Park Rapids Public Schools where she graduated high school with the class of 1972.
On December 23, 1972, she was united in marriage to Ronald Ivan Petrie at the Riverside United Methodist Church. This union was blessed with three children: Tammy, Cary, and Gregory. For 15 months Sue stayed in Park Rapids with their new daughter Tammy. In March 1974, she and her daughter joined Ron in Nurnburg, West Germany, where daughter Cary was born, in 1975.
In 1975, they were transferred to Ft. Bragg, NC and in 1978 were sent back to Germany where they were based in Mannheim, West Germany. Their son Gregory was born in Frankfort, West Germany in 1979. Later they were stationed in Damstadt. She was a wonderful cook and baker. Susan would often be asked by a homesick soldier to make a favorite homemade dish that they had cravings for. Plus for many years she was well known for making wedding cakes. Her homemade barbeque sauce ribs, chicken noodle soup, and lasagna will be remembered by her family.
In 1980, they were transferred to Ft. Lewis, WA, and then in 1982, they were transferred to Lanstuhl, Germany. In 1985, they transferred to Ft. Ord, CA where they lived until 1989. While Ron served in Korea, Sue and the three children made their home in Osage, MN until 1990, when Ron was sent to the Aberdeen Proving Grounds in Maryland. In 1994 they returned and settled permanently north of Dorset. Sue was a great hunting and fishing partner with her husband Ron, and played many games of Aggravation, the 500 Rummy, Skipbo, Garbage, and Gin Rummy. In her spare time, she enjoyed quilting, wind chimes and hummingbirds. She was a master jigsaw puzzle assembler and spent hours with her children and grandchildren working on them. She enjoyed crocheting blankets and pillows for many.
She will be lovingly remembered by her husband for the past 45 years and soul mate, Ronald of Dorset; her three children: Tammy (Ken) Gartner of Park Rapids, Cary (Dennis) Dupont of Park Rapids and Gregory (Brooke) Petrie of Park Rapids; 9 grandchildren: Aly, Brandon, Aaron, Leona and Kenny Jr. Gartner, Lisa, Jessica, Tina and Crystal Dupont; 4 great-grandchildren: Dominic, Alex, Carter and Leah; 5 sisters: Barb Hildebrandt, Judy Petrie, Connie Paulson, Nancy Dickerson and Myla Jean James; 2 brothers: James Kiefert and LeRoy Paulson; as well as many nieces, nephews other relatives and friends.
