Rolland “Sonny” Cumber, age 86 of Park Rapids, MN, peacefully passed on Sunday, August 19, 2018, at his home near Park Rapids, MN with his loved ones at his side.
Sonny was born on October 15, 1931, in Montpelier, ND to George and Rachel (Seiler) Cumber. At the age of 4, Sonny moved with his family to the Park Rapids/Osage, MN area where his parent’s farmed. He attended the District #309 Country School near his home. As a young man, Sonny ventured to Minneapolis where he worked for the Schaefer Corporation, a refrigeration manufacturing plant for 13 years. On March 29, 1952, Sonny was united in marriage to Rosemary Crandall at the Oak Knoll Lutheran Church in Oak Knoll, MN. This union was blessed with five children: Rodney, Bruce, Jeffrey, Trudy, and Tandra. In June of that year, Sonny was called into active service with the United States Army and served in Korea during the Korean War as a member of the 27th Infantry Division until his honorable discharge in March of 1954. In 1964, Sonny began working constructing for Capp Homes in the Twin Cities. In 1971, Sonny moved with his family to the Park Rapids area where they purchased a dairy farm west of Park Rapids. Sonny enjoyed the rigors of farm life until 1977 when they moved to Everett, WA where he worked with his brother building homes for Capp Homes until his retirement in 1981, when they returned to Park Rapids. They sold their farm in 1993 and moved into Park Rapids. Throughout his lifetime, Sonny enjoyed the outdoors; especially when he could be out hunting or fishing. He and Rosemary enjoyed traveling extensively across the United States.
He will be lovingly remembered by his wife for these past 66 years, Rosemary; her four children: Rodney (Catherine) Cumber of Catonsville, Maryland, Bruce (Irene) Cumber of Brooklyn Center, MN, Trudy (Al) Whittlef of Garrison, MN and Leesburg, FL and Tandra Waddle of Park Rapids; 10 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren; three sisters: Evon Crandall of Bagley, MN, Lorraine Pahl of Bloomington, MN and Beverly Schwab of New Hampshire; one brother, James Cumber of Post Falls, Idaho as well as many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Sonny was preceded in death by his son, Jeffrey in 1987, his sister, Betty and his brother, Buddy.
