PHYLLIS ANN HATCH
March 20, 1941 – November 28, 2019
Phyllis Ann Hatch, 78, Park Rapids, MN, died peacefully on Thursday, Nov. 28, 2019 at Villa Maria, Fargo, ND.
Phyllis Baumgartner was born March 20, 1941 to Joe and Rose Baumgartner in Valley City, ND. She grew up at Oriska, ND and graduated from high school in 1959. While working at the Oriska Café Phyllis met John Hatch, who was working for the highway department. They married on January 27, 1962 in Oriska, ND.
During John’s service with the US Navy, they lived in Fargo, ND, Sioux Falls, SD, Boise, Idaho, and Dallas, Texas. Upon his retirement, they moved to Park Rapids, where John operated a tree farm and Phyllis worked as the reservation manager at the Super 8 motel for over 30 years. Phyllis thoroughly enjoyed her work at the motel, it was very important to her. John passed away on their wedding anniversary on Jan 27, 1995. Phyllis made her home in Park Rapids until last year, when she moved to New Perspective Senior Living in West Fargo, ND.
Phyllis was a longtime member of St Peter’s Catholic Church. She was very proud of her membership and affiliation with the Park Rapids American Legion, where she greatly enjoyed spending time helping with events and socializing with her many life-long friends. Although quiet in nature, Phyllis was an occasional instigator of pranks and could always step away as the innocent party. These antics were the draw for many of her nieces and nephews, who called her a favorite.
Phyllis is survived by sisters: Kathleen (Donald) Gruman of Oriska, ND, and Karen (Al) Huber, Valley City, ND; brothers: Duane (Emy) Baumgartner of Sartell, MN, Gordon (Marilee) Baumgartner of Fargo, ND, Vernon (Chris) Baumgartner of Portland, OR, Eugene (Dorothy) Baumgartner of Belcourt, ND, Keith Baumgartner of Valley City, ND, and Kent (Sue ) Baumgartner of Valley City, ND; sisters-in-laws: Beverly (Don) of Caswell, FL, and Debra Hatch of San Diego, CA; several nieces and nephews including her very special Park Rapids niece, Sheila Caswell.
Phyllis was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and sister, Joan Groth; brothers: Donald and Jerry; and brother-in-law, Don Caswell.
Her funeral mass will be held at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Park Rapids, MN, Thursday, Dec. 5th, 2019 at 10:30 a.m. with Father Tomas Friedl officiating. Casket bearers will be Dale Caswell, Dane Caswell, Sheila Caswell, Ron Groth, Dan Groth, and Ryan Huber. Honorary casket bearer will be Rick Groth.
