MARVIN WALTER GIRVEN December 21, 1938 – May 7, 2020 Marvin Walter Girven, age 81, a long time Menahga, MN area resident, peacefully passed from this life to eternal life on Thursday, May 7, 2020 at the Green Pine Acres Nursing Home in Menahga, MN. Marvin was born on December 21, 1938 in Bear Lake, Michigan to Robert and Anna (Smeltzer) Girven. As a teenage boy, he moved to Montana and lived with his uncle in the beautiful Gallatin Valley near Bozeman. Here he loved out many hunting and fishing adventures. On June 14, 1959, Marvin was united in marriage to his sweetheart, Barbara Ann Buckner back in Bear Lake, Michigan. This union was blessed with two daughters: Betty and Karen. Shortly after their marriage, they returned to Montana where they settled in Belgrade and their daughters were born. They loved the natural rugged beauty of Montana. Marvin worked in a Talc Plant in Three Forks and later at a flour mill. In 1974, the young family ventured to Minnesota and purchased a farm in Runeberg Township west of Menahga. Here Marvin engaged in dairy farming and raising and training beautiful Belgian Draft Horses. He used the horses daily in his farming operations. Marvin enjoyed the challenges of farming and the good hard work it required. In 1985, he sold the dairy cows and transitioned over to raising beef. Above all, Marvin devoted his life to his precious wife, Barbara; his daughters, and his grandchildren who he loved with all his heart. He will be lovingly remembered by his daughters: Betty (Rockwell) Hizer of Oskaloosa, Iowa, and Karen (Roger, Sr.) Hanson of Detroit Lakes, MN; three dearly loved grandchildren: Laurie (David) Dyck of Causton, British Columbia, Canada, Rebecca (Mike) Leonard of Lake Park, MN and Roger (Danielle) Hanson, Jr. of Valley City, ND; seven precious great-grandchildren: JC, Ryley, Kaitlynn, Morgan, Jackson, Harper, and Carrigan; as well as a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends. Marvin was preceded in death by his parents; his precious wife and one great-grandson, Kyle. Due to Covid 19 private family services are being planned.
