ELSE UNDEM HINDS

November 19, 1924 – July 26, 2019

                Else Undem Hinds, age 94, a longtime Park Rapids/Hubbard area resident, peacefully passed into eternal life on Friday, July 26, 2019, at her “warm and loving home” at the Heritage Living Center in Park Rapids, MN.

                She was born on November 19, 1924 to Niels and Anna Miller in Askov, MN.  After high school, she traveled to Detroit, MI where she worked as a waitress and housekeeper.  The following year she attended nurses training at St. Lukes Hospital in Duluth, MN and received her registered nurses diploma in 1946.  She was united in marriage to Conrad J. Undem in 1947.  They made their first home in Little Sauk, MN for 12 years.  After residing for several years in Arlington, SD and Dickinson, ND, they settled in Park Rapids in 1963.  After Conrad’s death in 1975, she was united in marriage to James Hinds in 1978 and they made their home in Hubbard where she lived until entering the Heritage Living Center in 2016.

                Else worked as a nurse at St. Joseph’s Hospital for two years and then as a school nurse at Park Rapids Area Public Schools for many years.  She was a long-time active member of Calvary Lutheran Church where she served as a Sunday school and release time teacher, on church committees and visited the sick and shut-ins and was an active participant in Bible Studies.  She was also active in her community as a long-time volunteer with hospice, volunteering at the nursing home, and as a member of homemakers, TOPS and the Hubbard Senior Citizens.  She also loved reading, walking, gardening and spending time with her family and many, many friends. Else was proud of her Danish heritage and spent many hours decorating and preparing food for her traditional Danish Christmas celebration.

                Else is survived by four sons: Roger (Linda) of Hinckley, MN, Tom of Hattisburg, MS, David (Kathy) of Mora, MN and Bradley (Nancy) of Bel Air, MA; two daughters: Jeanne (Jim) of Ely, MN and Beverly (Jens-Erik) of Heden, Denmark; 16 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren; her extended family: Shirley of Grand Rapids, MN, Gary (Sandra) of Hinckley, MN and Jim (Jeanne) of Ely, MN; eight grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.

                She was preceded in death by her husband, Conrad Undem in 1975; her husband, James Hinds in 1993; her son, Allen (Marcia) in 2006; her parents, four sisters and one brother and one great-grandchild.

                Funeral services will be held 1 PM Friday, August 2, 2019 at Calvary Lutheran Church in Park Rapids with the Reverend Steve Norby and Reverend Loren Ferch officiating. The soloist will be Deane Johnson and the organist, Muff Magelssen.  Her grandsons will serve as her casket bearers and her granddaughters will serve as her honorary casket bearers.  Interment will be made in the Greenwood Cemetery.  Visitation will begin at 11:30 AM on Friday at the church.
