FLOYD JOSEPH FUNK January 7, 1923 " March 28, 2009Floyd Joseph Funk, age 86, of the Menahga-Park Rapids, MN area, passed away peacefully on Saturday evening, March 28, 2009 at the Green Pine Acres Nursing Home in Menahga. Floyd was born on January 7, 1923 to Charlie and Henrietta (Bliefield) Funk on his parent"s farm near Nimrod, MN. It was in this same area that he attended country school near his home. As a young man, Floyd helped his parents run their dairy farm and also ran a trap line. Floyd"s skills as a trapper became so effective that he earned enough money to buy his first new pickup truck with proceeds earned trapping mink and muskrat. He was also an excellent horseman who would buy colts, train them and race them at many of the area county fairs. In 1960, Floyd ventured west to Montana where he worked at several large industrial sawmills. He also spent some time timber jacking in the large and rugged Rocky Mountains. While in Montana, Floyd met and fell in love with the most beautiful girl in Ringling, MT, Katherine Ellen Vinton. They were married on April 25, 1963. This union was blessed with one son, Fredrick Carl. The young couple made their home in Montana until 1968 when Floyd returned with his bride and purchased a farm near Staples, MN. Floyd and Kate engaged in raising dairy heifers and beef cattle. He also worked in the woods logging and tree planting for the State of Minnesota. Floyd and Katie also enjoyed working together in ricing many area lakes and marshes. Each spring, Floyd would look forward to planting a large vegetable garden which he nurtured into fruitful abundance to share with his neighbors and friends. In 1996, Floyd moved with his family to a farm northwest of Menahga where he has resided up to the present time. Throughout almost all of Floyd"s life, he maintained a stable of horses which he enjoyed breaking and using on a regular basis. For many years he was an active member of the Northern Lights Saddle Club. Above all, Floyd devoted his life to his precious wife, Katie and his son, Fred who gave him a heart swelled with pride. Floyd will be lovingly remembered by his wife for the past 46 years, Katie Ellen; his son, Fred of Park Rapids; one sister, Katherine Balin of Brookfield, Illinois; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers: Fredrick Carl and Ervin Henry and one sister, Edith Sanders. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M. on Saturday, April 4, 2009 at the Cardini-Pearson Funeral Home in Menahga, MN with Reverend Loren Ferch officiating. Casketbearers will be: Fred Funk, Bill Funk, Aaron Funk, Terry Patson, Steve Williams and Virgil Wilmes. Visitation will be held from 5 P.M. to 8 P.M. Friday, April 3, 2009 at the Cardini-Pearson Funeral Home and for one hour prior to the service at the funeral home on Saturday. A luncheon will be hosted at the United Methodist Church in Menahga following the funeral service. Interment will be made at the Greenwood Cemetery in Park Rapids, MN.
