FLORENCE "Flo" MAE MESSER September 22, 1927 ~ January 8, 2010 Florence "Flo" Mae Messer, age 82 of Menahga, MN, passed away on Friday, January 8th 2010 at Green Pine Acres Nursing Home in Menahga. Florence was born in Friesland, MN on September 22, 1927 to Arthur and Hilda (Wicklund) Olson. She attended and graduated from Sandstone High School in June of 1945. Flo was united in marriage to Ralph Eggers and two children were born to this union: Sandon and Jay. She lived in Minneapolis and Fridley working as a bookkeeper for Fridley Medical Center. On January 28, 1972 Flo was united in marriage to Melvin Messer in Anoka, MN. The couple made their home in Fridley. In 1984 Flo & Mel moved to their retirement home on the Shell River in rural Menahga, MN. In July of 2006 Flo suffered a debilitating stroke. For the past 3 ½ years she has received excellent care from the staff at the Green Pine Acres Nursing Home. Flo was a member of the First English Lutheran Church in Menahga, the Menahga Conservation Club, and the Menahga Horticultural Society. Florence is survived by her husband, Melvin Messer of Park Rapids; 2 sons, Sandon Eggers, Jay Eggers of Edina, MN; 3 step children, William Messer of Honolulu, HI, Kristine (Richard) Besel, of Worthington, MN, and Robert Messer of Edina, MN; several grandchildren; 4 siblings, Elda Owen, Eileen Johnson, Edith Anderson and Glen (Phyllis) Olson. She is preceded in death by her parents, Arthur and Hilda Olson; siblings, Arnold Olson, Lester Olson, Verna Carpenter, Norma Alm, and Jean Bowe. Memorial services will be held at 1:00 P.M. on Saturday, January 16, 2010 at the First English Lutheran Church in Menahga with Reverend Steven Bruer officiating. Organist and soloist will be Lonnie Schmidt. He will sing "In The Garden" and "The Lord"s Payer." The congregational hymn will be "Rock of Ages". Honorary casketbearers will be Jay Eggers, Sandy Eggers, Bill Messer, Bob Messer, Kristine Besel, and Rich Besel. Interment will be made in the Shell City Cemetery in the spring of 2010.
