GLADYS LEONA WETTELS January 22, 1918 " March 18, 2010 Gladys Leona Wettels, age 92, peacefully entered Heaven"s Gates on Thursday, March 18, 2010 at the Innovis Health Center in Fargo, ND surrounded by her loved ones. Gladys was born on January 22, 1918 near Ponsford, MN to Martin and Emma Hazel (Anderson) Stephens. She attended the Linnell Country School through the eighth grade and then went on to attend high school in Park Rapids from where she graduated with the Class of 1936. Gladys furthered her education by attending Normal teacher"s training for one year and then taught country school in the Lake George-Kabekona area for several years. In 1941, Gladys ventured West where she gained employment in a defense plant at Long Beach, CA building military aircraft during World War II. After the war, she returned to Ponsford where on December 5, 1946 she was united in marriage to Johnny Wettels. This union was blessed with five children: Jerry, Barbara "Babs", Cheryl "Charlie", Jim and Russell. Gladys devoted herself to making a warm and loving home for her husband and children. She was a wonderful cook and baker who will be long remembered for her delicious homemade noodles, chocolate cake with her incredible frosting, cinnamon rolls and homemade buns. Each spring, Gladys would nurture a large garden into fruitful abundance to can for her growing family. She would also raise baby chicks each season for her family"s table. Gladys was a woman of faith who loved worshipping each Sunday at St Pauls Lutheran Church near Ponsford. She enjoyed filling her quiet times with crocheting or quilting. Gladys was a competitive scrabble player who enjoyed matching her wits with her neighbor friends. Above all, Gladys dedicated her life to her husband, children and grandchildren who she loved with all her heart. She will be lovingly remembered by her five children: Jerry (Darlene) Wettels of Ponsford, Babs (Keith) Gilbertson of Belton, Texas, Cheryl (Jay) Jones of Moorhead, MN, Jim (Karen) Wettels of Ponsford, and Russ (Cindy) Wettels of Detroit Lakes, MN; 12 grandchildren; 17 great grandchildren; l sister, Doris (Hank) Skidmore of Mendon, Utah; four special sisters-in-law: Alvina, Luella, Alma and Mary Ann; brother-in-law, Harold "Bud"; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Gladys was preceded in death by her husband, Johnny in 2001; her two grand daughters: Lynn Wettels and Annie Shearer; her two brothers: James and Morace and l sister, Ruby. Funeral services will be held 10 AM Monday, March 22, 2010 at the Grace Community Church in Osage with Pastor John M. Johannes of St. Pauls Lutheran Church officiating. The organist will be Mark Tretbar and the pianist, JoAnne Mikula. The casketbearers will be her grandsons: Tommy Wettels, Jeff Gilbertson, Jeremy Gilbertson, Seth Jones, Jason Wettels and Ryan Wettels. The honorary casketbearers will be her grand daughters: Ginger Woodrum, Jodi Wieters, Shannon Preston, Sarah Albrecht, Kimberly Wettels and Alicia Wettels. Interment will be made in the St. Paul Lutheran Cemetery next to her husband, Johnny. Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 PM on Sunday, March 21, 2010 at the Jones-Pearson Funeral Home and at the church on Monday beginning one hour prior to the service. Following the funeral, a luncheon will be hosted by St. Paul"s Lutheran Church. All memorials will be given to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.
