Erma was born on May 6, 1919, in Pipestone County of Southwestern MN to John and Nellie (Thomas) Buck. It was in this same area that she attended country school near her home and grew into womanhood. As a young woman, Erma's family ventured north to Menahga, MN, where they settled on a farm on the Hubbard Prairie. She was united in marriage in 1939 to William Nathan Granroth. This marriage was blessed with five children: Geraldine, Norma, Arnold, Larry, and Dale. They engaged in dairy farming in the Menahga and Sebeka areas. Erma worked right along side her husband in developing a fine herd of Holstein dairy cattle. She worked long hard days caring for their livestock and milking the dairy herd twice per day seven days per week. She also worked hard in the fields transforming the rugged land into a productive farm and raising the crops needed to feed their herd. In addition, Erma devoted herself to making a warm and loving home for her husband and children. She was a wonderful cook and baker who will be long remembered for her delicious home cooking. Each spring she looked forward to planting a large vegetable garden which she would nurture into fruitful abundance to can for her growing family. She also churned her own butter, baked Finnish flat bread, and did her family's laundry with an old wringer washing machine. In 1978, they sold the farm to their son, Arnold, and moved into Menahga. Her life was forever changed by the death of her husband, Bill, in 2001. Erma's own health failed and she became a resident of the Green Pine Acres Nursing Home in 2007 where she has resided right up to the present time. She will be lovingly remembered by her five children: Geraldine Erickson of Hibbing, MN, Norma Lillie of White Bear Lake, MN, Arnold Granroth of Sebeka, Larry (Janice) Granroth of Iowa City, IA, and Dale (Karin) Granroth of Sebeka, MN; 14 beloved grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren; her sister, Dollie LaMusga of Duluth, MN; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
