WILLIAM BENSON HORNOctober 30, 1935 " November 7, 2010 William Benson Horn, age 75 of Zimmerman, MN, formerly of the Mankato-Lake Crystal, MN areas, passed away peacefully while with his family and friends in deer camp near Park Rapids, MN on November 7, 2010. Bill was born on October 30, 1935 in Minneapolis to Berry and Elizabeth (Kirby) Horn. He attended the Breck Academy in St. Paul from where he graduated with the Class of 1952. Bill went on to attend Carleton College in Northfield, MN. In 1954, he entered the United States Army where he proudly served his country until his honorable discharge in 1956. While stationed in White Plains, NY, Bill met Lenora "Lee" Hill and the two were married on October 27, 1956. This union was blessed with four children: Jim, Sue, Sandi and Dave. The young couple made their home in Minneapolis for a number of years where Bill worked as an installer for the Northwestern Bell Telephone Company. In 1968, the Horn family moved to Mankato where Bill was promoted into a management position with Northwestern Bell. In 1976, Bill moved with his family to a hobby farm near Lake Crystal, MN where they raised Morgan horses, donkeys and various other farm animals. In 1996 they moved to a farm near Zimmerman where they have resided up to the present time. Bill was an outdoor enthusiast who loved to hunt deer, water fowl, pheasants and turkey. He enjoyed the sport of curling for many years. Bill was an active youth volunteer who worked with the Boy Scouts, 4-H, the YMCA Indian Guides, and the American Foreign Exchange Student program. He was also a member of the Morgan Horse Association and the Bernese Mountain Dog Association, the Woodcock-Herbst American Legion Post #216 in Princeton, MN and was a lifetime member of the National Rifle Association. Above all, Bill devoted his life to his wife, Lee; his children and his grandchildren who he loved with all his heart. Bill is survived by his wife, Lee his children: James Horn of Zimmerman, LeeAnn Mateffy-Horn of Plymouth, Susan and Mike Graham of Nolensville, TN, Sandra and Mike Wagner and David and Lisa Horn all of Mpls.; his nine grandchildren: Andrea, Zachary, Logan, Samuel, Jonah, William, Lisetta, Claire and Elizabeth; his two sisters: Eleanor and Ken Mielke of Prior Lake, MN and Marie and Ron Frederick of Temecula, CA; his brother, John and Shirley Horn of Orlando, FL; special friends, Chuck and Terese Cullinan of Zimmerman as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Memorial services are set for Sunday, November 14, 2010 at 3:00 P.M. at the Christ Church in Otsego, MN with the Reverend Tom Ness officiating. Honorary casketbearers will be: Chuck Cullinan, Vince Cruz, Marco Baughn, Tom Heckathorn and Roger Barron. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the services. Following the service a luncheon and time of fellowship will be provided for all. The family will be distributing memorials to Bill"s favorite charities. Video Tribute coming soon here.
