HARRIET ALICE SALGRENMarch 17, 1921 " February 12, 2011 Harriet Alice Salgren, age 89, of Milaca, MN, peacefully entered into Eternity on Saturday evening, February 12, 2011 at the Elim Nursing Home in Milaca with her loved ones at her side.Harriet was born on March 17, 1921, in Milaca Township to Ed and Sylvia (Judd) Kaspar. It was in this same area that Harriet attended the Sunnyside District #60 country school near her home. On July 21, 1940, Harriet was united in marriage to Earl Salgren by Pastor Harold Hansen in Milaca. This union was blessed with three sons: Wayne, Carl and Harry. The young couple moved to Fort Dodge, Iowa, where the two oldest sons were born. After Earl went off to serve his country in World War II, Harriet and the boys returned to Milaca. After the war, the young couple purchased a farm in Page Township north of Milaca where they had made their home since 1946. Harriet dedicated her life to making a warm and loving home for her family. She was a wonderful cook and baker who will be long remembered for her delicious homemade breads and rhubarb cake. She was a member of the UgoIgo Mothers Club in Tibbetts Brook. Harriet was actively involved with the ministry of the Tibbetts Brook Sunday School in her neighborhood and also the Auxiliary of the Hanson-Hayes American Legion Post #178 in Milaca. Harriet loved the out doors, especially when she was fishing or helping her husband with the farm work. Her life was forever saddened by the death of her husband and soulmate, Earl in 1994 and her son, Carl in 2002. Her home was known throughout the neighborhood as a gathering place where a hot cup of coffee, good food and friendly hospitality could always be found. Due to her own failing health, Harriet moved off the farm in 2003 and became a resident of the Elim Nursing Home where she had served on the resident"s council for a number of years. Above all, Harriet devoted her life to her husband, her children, her precious grandchildren and great grandchildren who she loved with all her heart. She will be lovingly remembered by her sons: Wayne (Audrey) Salgren of LeHigh, IA and Harry Salgren of Chloride, AZ; two daughters-in-law: Ruth Salgren and Helen Salgren both of Milaca, MN; 10 dearly loved grandchildren and 34 great grandchildren; 1 great great grandchild; three sisters: Ethel Johnson of Rockford, IL, Lucille (Robert) Segerstrom of Foley, MN, and Bonnie Scherer of White Bear Lake, MN; two brothers: Ed A Kaspar of Cedarsburg, WI, and George (Cookie) Kaspar of Milaca, MN; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.Harriet was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; five brothers-in-law; and her son, Carl in 2002; granddaughter, Eileen Hoffman in 2004 and a great grandson, Oscar who died in 1986.Funeral services will be held at 11 AM Friday, February 18, 2011 at the Milaca Evangelical Free Church in Milaca with Rev. Tom Sahlstrom and Harriet"s nephew, Larry Salgren officiating. Music will be provided by friends: Marilyn Anderson, Marlene Eggen, Dan Almquist and Gary Eggen; a solo will be sung by Grandaughter, April Herman. The active casket bearers will be; grandsons: Dennis Salgren, Wayne Salgren Jr., Victor Salgren, Claus Salgren and great grandsons: Ronald Hoffman and Justin Hoffman. The honorary casketbearers will be grandchildren: Shinell Linberger, Elaine Johnson, Tammy Graham, Robin Felch, April Herman, Alex Salgren and all of Harriet"s great grandchildren. Interment will be made in the Salgren family plot at the Forest Hill Cemetery of Milaca. Following the service, a luncheon will be hosted by the Hansen-Hayes American Legion Post #178 in Milaca. Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 PM on Thursday, February 17, 2011 at the Elim Nursing Home Chapel and for 1 hour prior to service at the Milaca Evangelical Free Church.
