HOWARD MILTON SALTERNovember 28, 1918 ~ April 19, 2011 Howard M. Salter, age 92, a long time resident of Park Rapids and former owner of Salter Studio died Tuesday, April 19th, at the Presbyterian Home Center with his family at his side. Howard was born in Bird Island, Minnesota on November 28, 1918 to Hannah and Seth Salter. He graduated from Olivia High School in 1938 and then obtained an Associate of Arts Degree at the University of Minnesota. Several months after the attack at Pearl Harbor, he joined the army and reported to the induction center at Fort Snelling. After receiving basic training in Wyoming, Texas and Mississippi, he attended Officer Candidate School near Washington D.C. and graduated as a Second Lieutenant. He continued his training in southern England and participated in the Normandy Invasion, crossing the English Channel and landing on Omaha Beach on June 7, 1941. He served in the 532nd Heavy Maintenance Tank Company, operating near the front lines in six battles, including Saint-Lo, France and the Battle of the Bulge at Bastogne, Belgium. He retired from the Army as a Major. Howard returned from Europe to Olivia, Minnesota where he met Arlene Zimmer. They married and moved to Los Angeles, California where Howard graduated from the Fred Archer School of Photography. In 1952, they moved to Laramie, Wyoming, where they operated a photography studio, and then to Park Rapids where they established Salter Studio, serving the community and surrounding areas for over 30 years. Howard and Arlene were blessed with three children - Charles, David and John. Howard thoroughly enjoyed the people in the Park Rapid"s community and the beautiful scenery, especially Itasca State Park. Howard was an active member of St. Johns Lutheran Church since 1956. He was a member of the American Legion since 1957 and a past president and 50 year member of the Park Rapids Lion"s Club. He assisted with the Park Rapids Food Shelf and Big Brothers Program. He was very dedicated to the youth of Park Rapids, serving as Scout Master of Troop 58 for over 15 years. Howard received several awards for his work with the scouts, including the Silver Beaver Award. Howard also received the H.N. Bishop Award and Jaycee Community Award. After retirement, Howard and Arlene enjoyed traveling throughout the lower 48 states and Alaska. They also derived great fulfillment from doing freelance photography. Howard is survived by Arlene, his wife of 61 years; 3 sons, Charles (Kathryn) Salter of Minnetonka, David (June) Salter of Colorado springs, CO, and John (Randi) Salter of Woodbury; five grandchildren and many nieces, nephews and other relatives. He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister Harriet. Funeral services are set for 3 p.m., Saturday, April 23 at St. Johns Lutheran Church in Park Rapids with Pastor James Neubauer and Pastor Tim Heinecke officiating. The vocalists will be Walt and Anita Hanniman who will sing, "Children Of The Heavenly Father". The Senior Bell Choir will perform "The Lamb". Congregational hymns will be: "My Redeemer Lives", "Beautiful Savior" and "Now Thank We All Our God". Burial is at the Olivia Cemetery on Sunday at 5 p.m. Visitation is Friday from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Jones-Pearson Funeral Home in Park Rapids and beginning one hour prior to the services on Saturday at the church. Following the service, a luncheon will be hosted by St Johns Lutheran Church.
