Harold LeRoy AlbeeApril 13, 1918 ~ June 8, 2011 Harold LeRoy Albee, 93, formerly of Park Rapids and Newton, Iowa, passed away Wednesday, June 8, 2011, at the VA Home in Minneapolis, MN. Harold was born April 13, 1918 in Newton, Iowa, to Allen and Julia (Dodd) Albee. During high school, Harold was a stand-out athlete in football, basketball and track. He went on to attend Drake University in Des Moines where he studied business and accounting. While at Drake he served as captain of the men"s track team and set a world record in the Men"s 400 meter relay. In 1942, Harold enlisted in the U.S. Army where he served his country as a 1st Lt. in the Army Intelligence Corps. He later went to Officer Candidate School and became an Infantry Company Commander (captain). He was awarded a bronze star and purple heart for his heroism in battle. His family loved hearing his amazing stories about his time in Europe during WWII. As an accountant and comptroller, Harold worked at Maytag Corp. in Newton, Munsingwear Co. in Minneapolis, TWA Airlines in Kansas City, American Airlines in New York City and back to Minneapolis where he retired from Farmhand Co. in 1982. In 1968, he purchased a resort on Little Sand Lake near Park Rapids, which he and his family operated until 1992. Harold was an avid fisherman who loved to match wits with the wily catfish, walleye, bass, muskie and northern pike. He also loved his Minnesota Twins and enjoyed hunting. He will be lovingly remembered by his five children: Julie (Dale) Lusti of Buffalo, Minn., Katy Harris, Ellen Albee and Buzz Albee of Park Rapids, and David (Angela) Albee of St. Paul; six grandchildren: Rich Lusti of Champlin, Liz Lusti of Inver Grove Heights, Chris (Layla) Albee, Pat Albee and Jim Harris of Park Rapids, and Dr. Nathan (Jolene) Harris of Hopkins; five great grandchildren and brother, Robert Albee, Ocala, Fla. He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Lucille W. Albee, brother, William, sister, Mary and nephew, Doug. Visitation will be held 10:00-11:00am with service at 11:00am on Monday, June 13 at Jones-Pearson Funeral Home in Park Rapids. Funeral arrangements tentatively scheduled for 11:00am at the Minnesota Veterans Home in Minneapolis on Thursday, June 16, with burial to follow at Fort Snelling National Cemetery.
