LAWRENCE HARKEN "Larry" HEYERJuly 8, 1929 " September 1, 2011 Lawrence Harken "Larry" Heyer, 82, of Park Rapids, MN, passed away on Thursday, September 1, 2011 at the Mala Strana Health Care Center in New Prague, MN with his loved ones at his side.Larry was born on July 8, 1929 near Kamrar, Iowa to Ben and Bertha (Cordes) Heyer. As a small boy his family moved to the Litchfield-Cosmos, MN area where he attended country school and grew into manhood helping on his parent"s farm. As a young man, Larry gained employment working on a logging crew in Northern MN. In 1951, he entered the United States Army where he proudly served his country during the Korean War as a corporal in the Army motor pool. Upon receiving his honorable discharge in 1953, Larry returned to the Litchfield-Cosmos area where he farmed. On June 23, 1956, he was united in marriage to the prettiest gal in all of Meeker County, Eva Raskie. Their union was blessed with three sons: Eugene, David and Keith. In addition to dairy and crop farming, Larry worked as an auto mechanic for Fenton Chevrolet in Litchfield. In 1960, Larry moved with his family to Minneapolis where he worked for Mike Murphy"s Gas Station. In the mid-60"s, he gained employment with Telect, Inc., which later became Road Machinery and Supply (RMS) in a career that spanned over 27 years. Upon his retirement in 1991, Larry and Eva moved to Park Rapids, MN where they settled on a hobby farm north of Park Rapids in Henrietta Township. Larry enjoyed being an active member of the Park Rapids Antique Tractor Club and the Park Rapids VFW Post. He enjoyed tinkering and repairing tractors and engines and anything else in need of fixing. Each spring he looked forward to planting a large vegetable garden which he would nurture into fruitful abundance to share with his family and friends. Larry enjoyed reading and in his younger years, hunting and fishing whenever time allowed. Above all, Larry devoted his life to his precious wife, Eva, his sons, his grandchildren and great grandchildren who he loved with all his heart.He is survived by his wife, Eva; two sons: David Heyer of Park Rapids and Keith (Karen) Heyer of Prior Lake, MN; ten grandchildren; 4 great grandchildren; two sisters: Dorothy Naber of Moses Lake, WA and Phyliss (Floyd) Krueth of Bemidji, MN; l brother, Vernon (Judy) Heyer of Atwater, MN; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.He was preceded in death by one son, Eugene, his parents and l sister, Karen.Funeral services will be held 2 PM Tuesday, September 6, 2011 at the Jones-Pearson Funeral Home in Park Rapids, MN with the Rev. Stephen Nordby officiating. Music selections will be: "Amazing Grace", "Open the Eyes of My Heart, Lord", "I Can Only Imagine" and "When I Get Where I"m Going". Active casket bearers will be: Dylan Heyer, Dalton Heyer, John Raskie, Jim Raskie, Brian Raskie and Tyrone Tupy. The honorary casket bearers will be: Kristy VanWinkle, Misty VanWinkle, Courtney Husemann, Miranda Heyer, Randi Zahratka, Ashley Heyer, Tiffany Heyer and Stephanie Heyer. Interment will be made in the Greenwood Cemetery of Park Rapids. The Star of The North Marine Corps League will provide the military honors. Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 PM Monday, September 5 and for one hour prior to the services on Tuesday at the Jones-Pearson Funeral Home.
