LAVERN W. "CHUB" ZUBKESeptember 7, 1930 ~ April 30, 2012 Lavern W. "Chub" Zubke, age 81 of Laporte, MN passed away on Monday, April 30, 2012 at the Havenwood Care Center in Bemidji, MN. Lavern, fondly known as Chub by his friends and family, was born on September 7, 1930 to Albert and Pearl (Pies) Zubke in Waubay, South Dakota. Chub attended the Laporte School. Chub joined the United States Navy on May 29, 1951 where he proudly served his country as a cook aboard a re-fueling ship stationed out of Norfolk, VA. He married the love of his life, Lila May Hughs on July 22, 1952 at the Lutheran Church in Walker, MN. While living in Virginia they were blessed with a daughter, Wanda. Chub was honorably discharged from the Navy on May 23, 1955, at which time he and Lila moved back to the Laporte area. They eventually purchased land on County Road 95 where they lived into their retirement. During this time, Chub and Lila were additionally blessed with 3 sons: David, Roger and William. The boys worked alongside their dad farming and logging during their growing up years. Chub was hired in 1963 by the Hubbard County Highway Department where he worked in road maintenance for 29 years until his retirement in 1992. He was a member of the Laporte School Board and a Supervisor for Schoolcraft Township. He was also an active member of the Trinity Lutheran Church in Lake George, MN. Chub was an avid deer hunter and loved to tell stories of the "good old days" of hunting. He had a love for farming and worked on his hobby farm well into his retirement years, but the most important loves of his life were God and his family. Chub will be lovingly remembered by his wife, Lila of Bemidji, MN; his children: Wanda (Clayton) Gladen, David (Deb), Roger (Debbie) and William all of Laporte, MN; 11 grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren; 2 brothers: Melvin (Gloria) of Walker, MN and Lyle (Shirley) of Lake George, MN; 1 sister, Florence Johnson of Talent, OR; many nieces, nephews, other relatives and numerous friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Albert and Pearl; 4 sisters: Alice, Mildred, Inez and Phyllis and 1 grandson, Jacob Zubke. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 A.M. on Saturday, May 5, 2012 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Lake George, MN with Reverend Donald Kirchner officiating. Casketbearers will be: David Zubke, Roger Zubke, William Zubke, Derek Gladen, Joshua Zubke, Wade Zubke, Brady Zubke and Jorden Zubke. Honorary casketbearers will be: Melvin and Gloria Zubke, Lyle and Shirley Zubke and Robert and Edith Lindgren. Visitation will be held from 6-8:00 P.M. on Friday, May 4, 2012 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Lake George, MN and for one hour prior to the service at the church on Saturday. Interment will be held at the Evergreen Cemetery in Laporte, MN.
