GENE ABBIE WEEKLEYOctober 2, 1924 ~ June 28, 2012 Gene Abbie Weekley, age 87 of Park Rapids, MN entered eternal life in heaven on Thursday, June 28, 2012 at Green Pine Acres Nursing Home in Menahga, MN. Gene was born on October 2, 1924 in Park Rapids, MN to Harry and Alma (Ruhnke) Town. She attended public schools in Park Rapids graduating from the Park Rapids High School with the Class of 1942. After graduation, she ventured to Aurora, Illinois where she made airplane parts and was the second woman in the history of this plant to be selected as Inspector of Product Workmanship. After the war, Gene returned to Park Rapids and worked at Schmider"s Confectionary Store and The National T Grocery Store. In January of 1947, Gene was married to Deane Weekley in Park Rapids. Their marriage was blessed with six children: Boyd, Paul, Lynn, Daniel, Timothy and Edward. Her son, Boyd was 17 when he died tragically in a motorcycle accident in 1965. In 1966, she went to Chef"s Training School in Moorhead. Gene worked at Moorhead University for two years in food management. In 1969, she moved to Spokane, WA where she worked for Saga/Marriot Hotels as food service director until her retirement in 1988. Throughout her professional career, Gene traveled across the United States where she worked in many places including Idlewild, CA, Lajuante, CO, Lewiston, ID and finally ending up in Spokane, WA. Gene also worked in Medora, ND at the Teddy Roosevelt National Park. In 1990, Gene returned to Park Rapids where she has made her home ever since. She was an active member of St. Johns Lutheran Church and was active in the ministry of the Ladies Aid. Gene was an avid gardener, enjoyed working jigsaw and crossword puzzles and reading. Gene is survived by her children: Lynn (Daryl) Robbins of Park Rapids, MN, Daniel Weekley of Spokane, WA, Timothy Weekley of Spokane, WA, Paul (Debra) Weekley of Spokane, WA; 10 grandchildren; 14 great grandchildren; 1 great-great grandson, Carson; sisters: Helen and Leone; brothers: Tom and David; sisters-in-law: Getty, Marion, Gloria and Luella; brother-in-law Jim Crook; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; her sons, Boyd in 1965 and Edward in 2008; brothers: Jim, Charles, Donald and Robert; sisters: Dorothy and Ruth; brothers-in-law: Herb, Ed and Charles. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Monday, July 2, 2012 at St. Johns Lutheran Church in Park Rapids, MN with Reverend James Neubauer and Reverend Tim Heinecke officiating. Organist Connie Wallert, Soloist Mike Poole. The casketbearers will be: Darin Robbins, Tandra Robbins, April Bower, Erika Hansen, Paula Anderson and Eric Weekley. The honorary casketbearers will be: Kevin Weekley, Boyd Weekley, Kathy Weekley, Joshua Weekley, Geoffrey Weekley and Jason Weekley. Interment will be held at Greenwood Cemetery, Park Rapids, MN. Visitation will be held for one hour prior to the service on Monday.
