FUNERAL SERVICES : 11:00 A.M. on Friday, February 1, 2013 at Redeemer Lutheran Church in Menahga, MN with Reverend John Ramsbacher officiating.VISITATION : One hour prior to the service at the church on Friday.SURVIVORS : His wife Rose, son Chris Nelson, step-daughter Linda Long (Dean), step-son Allan Stettner (Linda), brothers Harold, Roy, and Sydney (Kathy), as well as several grandchildren and great grandchildren. CYRUS JOHN NELSONSeptember 17, 1917 ~ January 28, 2013 Cyrus John Nelson was born on September 17, 1917 to Emil John Nelson and Julia I. Nelson (Weston) on a farm one mile south of Hillview, Minnesota. He was one of seven children; Evelyn, (August 29, 1915-May 6, 2001), Vernon (August 30, 1919-August 6, 1991), Harold (August 21, 1922), Roy (October 24, 1927), Max (October 13, 1930-December 12, 1993), and Sydney (September 12, 1932). Cy and his siblings grew up on the family dairy farm and attended country school near Sebeka. In 1941 Cy enlisted in the Army and served two tours of duty in Germany and France, where he met his first wife Jeanette. When he returned, he lived in California for a time, and then spent several years at different occupations, including mining gold, and underwater salvage. He also helped build a dam on the Snake River in Idaho as well as working at logging. He even spent time on the Marshall Islands, where he watched the first H Bomb being tested. Finally he returned to the Menahga area and opened his own sawmill. He and his son Chris lived near Stocking Lake until he went to work as a millwright for Honeywell Corp. in Minneapolis. In 1972, Cy married Rose Stettner in Hancock, Minnesota. He worked as a janitor at the University of Minnesota Morris until he retired. After retirement Cyrus and Rose moved to Menahga and made their home near Stocking Lake. They continued to live there together until health issues made it necessary for Cy to move to Green Pine Acres in Menahga. He spent the remainder of his life there. Cyrus was preceded in death by his father Emil, his mother Julia, his sister Evelyn, two brothers, Vernon and Max, his first wife Jeanette, step-daughter Christine, and sister-in-law Phyllis (Harold). He is survived by his wife Rose, son Chris Nelson, step-daughter Linda Long (Dean), step-son Allan Stettner (Linda), brothers Harold, Roy, and Sydney (Kathy), as well as several grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Friday, February 1, 2013 at the Redeemer Lutheran Church in Menahga, MN with Reverend John Ramsbacher officiating. Organist will be Ruth Ann Kinnunen. Soloist will be Lonnie Schmidt. He will sing "Amazing Grace" and "Peace in the Valley." The congregational hymn will be "What a Friend We Have in Jesus." Casketbearers will be Josh Long, Jenn Timm, Chad Versteeg, Scott Versteeg and Jeff Versteeg. Military honors will be provided by the Guy L. McDermeit V.F.W Post #6206 of Menahga, MN.
