MAANINGA " May 22, 2013 Larry Arnold Maaninga age 64, of Hibbing, Minnesota, a Vietnam Veteran and Purple Heart recipient (1969) died peacefully on May 22, 2013 at the Veterans Medical Center Hospital in Minneapolis, MN. He was a lifetime member of the Guy L. McDermit Post 6206 VFW in Menahga. Larry was born to Reino and Miriam (Dormanen) Maaninga on September 2, 1948 in Park Rapids; he was one of nine children raised on the farm east of Menahga in Shell River Township. After graduating from Menahga High School where he lettered in numerous sports, and serving in the US Army he attended the Mesabi Range College in Virginia before graduating from Bemidji State University in 1975. While at BSU he played and lettered on the schools baseball team. Larry also played for 20 years on the Lake and Pine amateur baseball with the Huntersville and Menahga teams. When he retired he was inducted into that leagues Hall of Fame. A big Minnesota sports fan Larry always had the Twins game on the radio or T.V., when the T.V. wasn"t on sports it was on the weather channel as he watched the weather in places he had been or was about to travel to. Larry was an over the road truck driver for many years before retiring in 2012. He visited all 48 continental states. Larry was preceded in death by his parents, sisters Ruth Clark and Beverly Pulju, brothers-in-law Ervin Pulju and Duane Nordby. Survived by his loving life partner of 25 years Jeanette Dren of Hibbing, Minnesota and her family; two sisters: Bette Nordby of Mt Iron, Minnesota and Connie Carlson of Rockford, Minnesota; four brothers: Robert (Laquita) Wierima of Deer Creek, Minnesota, Orville (Debbie) Maaninga of Copperas Cove, Texas, Curtis Maaninga of Minneapolis, Minnesota and Terry (Judy) Maaninga of Menahga, Minnesota; many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.Officiating Reverend Steven Bruer. Military honors provided by the Guy L. McDermeit VFW Post #6206. Following the service a luncheon will be served at the VFW in Menahga. A private interment will be held at the Jim Cook Cemetery.
