Friday, November 15, 2013, prior to service at Green Pine Acres Nursing Home in Menahga, MN.INTERMENT :SURVIVORS : Evelyn Grace Wilcox July 27, 1917 - November 13, 2013 Evelyn Grace "Evy" Wilcox, age 96, a long time Park Rapids, MN area resident, entered her new and perfect heavenly home on Wednesday evening, November 13, 2013 while a resident of the Green Pine Acres Nursing Home in Menahga, MN.Evy was born on July 27, 1917 to Robert and Etta (Gilpin) Witter on her parent"s farm near Osage, MN. She attended public school in Osage and went on to attend high school in Park Rapids. As a young woman, Evy ventured to Minneapolis where she worked in retail sales for a time. Later she took a job at a resort/fishing camp on Lake Kabetogama near the Canadian border. Here she met and later married the resort owner, Larry Wilcox. The two were married in December of 1941 at Chicago Heights, Illinois. This union was blessed with two sons: Robert and Dennis and a daughter, Cheryl. After their marriage, Larry entered the US Army. When World War II broke out, Larry was shipped to the European theatre of War and Evelyn returned to the Park Rapids area with her baby boy, Robert. After Larry"s honorable discharge, he came to Park Rapids to recover from his extensive battle injuries. When his health allowed, they returned to the resort on Lake Kabetogama for a number of years. Because of the remote and sparsely populated area they lived in, Evy would hold Sunday school in their cabin for the neighborhood children since there was not a church nearby. Later they moved to Melbourne, Florida where in addition to caring for her husband and children, Evie also gained employment working as the office administrator for a Methodist Kindergarten. She spent many countless hours watching her sons high school and college baseball and football games and supporting her daughters cheerleading activities. Shortly after Larry passed away in 1973, Evie returned to the Park Rapids area where she resided at the River Heights Apartments for many years. Her talent at decorating for events and holidays was appreciated by many. In her 80"s, Evy authored many short stories and was always a voracious reader. Her life was hampered by slowly losing her eyesight, she was legally blind for many years. In May of 2012, her failing health caused her to become a resident of the Green Pine Acres Nursing Home in Menahga.She will be lovingly remembered by her three children: Robert (Peggy) Wilcox of Benton, Arkansas, Dennis (Ann) Wilcox of Libby, MT and Cheryl Wilcox of Atlanta, GA; her six grandchildren and ten great grandchildren; two sisters: Shirley Schmidt of Park Rapids and Patty Corporal of Foley, Alabama and her brother, Mike Witter of Mora, MN; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.Evy was preceded in death by her husband, Larry in 1973; her sister, Winifred Poole and her brother, Maynard Witter. {xtypo_button1}
