Sophie Anna Forsman, age 92 of Petaluma, CA, formerly of San Mateo, CA and Menahga, MN peacefully passed into eternity at her home in surrounded by her loved ones on March 11, 2014. Sophie was born on January 5, 1922 on her parent's farm northwest of Menahga, MN to William and Maria (Alajoki) Haataja. She attended country school near her home, graduating from the Menahga High School with the Class of 1940. As a young woman, Sophie ventured to California where she gained employment as a nanny with the Gamble family of the Proctor & Gamble Company. On April 4, 1942, Sophie was united in marriage to Oiva Forsman in San Francisco, CA. This union was blessed with one son, David Emil Forsman. The young family made their home in San Mateo for 43 years. She devoted herself to creating a loving home for her husband and son. She was a wonderful cook and baker who will be long remembered for her delicious homemade pecan rolls and pecan pies. In her spare time, Sophie enjoyed hunting for treasure and garage sales and antique stores. Her life was deeply saddened by the death of her husband, Oiva in 1993. Since that time she had moved to Petaluma, CA to be with her son and daughter-in-law. Sophie will be lovingly remembered by her son, David (Patricia) Forsman of Petaluma, CA; two grand daughters: Spring Snuffin of CA and Petra (David) Benach of Amsterdam, Holland; one grandson, Justin (Kristine) Forsman of Petaluma, CA; her four precious great grandchildren: Jonathan, Daniel, Henry and Ivy; two brothers: Chester (Mildred) Haataja of Esko, MN and David (Dorothy) Haataja of Menahga, MN as well as many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband, Oiva; her parents; four sisters and eight brothers. Funeral services will be held 2pm Monday, May 19, 2014 at the Cardini-Pearson Funeral Home in Menahga with the Reverend Elmer Yliniemi officiating. Friends may call beginning one hour prior to the service. Interment will be made in the Alajoki Cemetery near Menahga.
