Roger Schave

Roger Roy Schave, age 66, of Park Rapids, MN, entered eternity on May 15, 2014 at his home surrounded by his loved ones following a valiant battle against cancer. Roger was born on June 22, 1947 in Willmar, MN to Harry and Mickie (Paseler-Frank) Schave. He graduated from the Balaton, MN High School with the Class of 1966 and then went on to attend the Worthington, MN Jr. College. On May 27, 1967, Roger was united in marriage to Marlys Nelson at the Sillerud Church near Balaton. In August of 1967, Roger entered the United States Army where he bravely served his country in Viet Nam. Following his honorable discharge in August of 1970, Roger returned to Minnesota where he drove truck for the Grain Belt Brewery for a time and then for Sather's Trucking in Round Lake, MN. He also worked for the Cenex Coop in Fulda for a number of years as their tire man. In 1979, he moved with his family to the Park Rapids, MN area where he drove for the Daggett Truck Line for 9 years and then moved on to Sioux Truck Line. He purchased his own truck in 1993 which he operated and retired from Elliott Transport in 2013. Roger moved to Northern MN so that he could have more time for hunting deer, bear, water fowl and pheasant and fishing the area lakes from a boat or on the ice, when he was not out on the road. He also enjoyed playing golf, camping, cooking, attending auctions and hunting for good deals. He loved to watch old westerns and war movies and especially liked any movie with John Wayne. He enjoyed playing chess and war computer games with his grandsons. He also had an interest in antique sporting goods. Roger was a member of the Calvary Lutheran Church in Park Rapids, the Otto Hendrickson American Legion Post # 212, Ducks Unlimited, the National Rifle Association and the Veterans Support Group. Above all, Roger devoted his life to his precious wife, Marlys; his children and his grandchildren who he loved with all his heart. He will be lovingly remembered by his wife for these past 47 years, Marlys of Park Rapids; his son, Randy (Sherry) Schave of Park Rapids; his daughter, Annette (Mike) Reichling of Park Rapids and his three grandchildren: Tlayne Reichling, Roger Lane Schave-Murphy and Brok Schave; his sister, Sandy (Ed) Swanson of Englewood, FL and his brother, Steve (Dar) Schave of LaCrosse, WI as well as nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends. Funeral services will be held 1:30 PM on Thursday, May 22, 2014 at the Calvary Lutheran Church with Rev. Steve Norby officiating. Dr. Vern Erickson will sing, with his wife, Sharon playing the piano, along with a song being sung by his daughter, son-in-law, Janelle Mathison, Paul and Janine Nelson. The active casket bearers will be: Randy Schave, Brok Schave, Roger Lane Schave-Murphy, Mike Reichling, Becki Swanson and Keith Christians. The honorary casket bearers will be: Bob Schrupp, Merwyn Olson, Dan Coleman, Tlayne Reichling, Jeff Grote, Jerry Klemz and Greg Remus. The Star Of The North Marine Corps League will provide full military honors. Interment will be held at 11 AM Saturday, May 24 at the St. Peter Cemetery in Balaton, MN. Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 PM Wednesday, May 21 at the Jones-Pearson Funeral Home with a prayer service at 7:30 PM and again at the church on Thursday, beginning one hour prior to the service.
