Barbara Girven

BARBARA ANN GIRVEN December 10, 1939 - July 6, 2014 Barbara Ann Girven, age 74, a long time Menahga, MN area resident, entered eternity on Sunday, July 6, 2014 at the Essentia Health Medical Center in Fargo, ND. Barbara was born on December 10, 1939 in Muskegon, MI to Herbert and Ann (Kuenzer) Buckner. She graduated from the Bear Lake, Michigan Public High School with the Class of 1958. She was united in marriage to Marvin W. Girven on June 14, 1959. This union was blessed with two daughters: Betty and Karen. Shortly after their marriage the young couple ventured to Belgrade, MT where Marvin gained employment working at a Talc plant and a flour mill for a number of years. They enjoyed the beautiful and rugged land of Montana and made their home there for 14 years. In 1974, they moved to Menahga, MN and purchased a farm west of town. They engaged in dairy farming where they worked side by side in caring for and milking their cattle herd. Barbara loved horses and in her younger years had trained and shown horses. For many years she and Marvin raised Belgian draft horses which they used daily in their farming operations. In 1985, they sold their cattle and Barb devoted more of her time and talents to her art work. She was a talented painter and has sold her art throughout the World. She also loved to do handwork and was a gifted crocheter, seamstress and knitter. Above all, Barbara devoted her entire life to her husband, her daughters and her grandchildren who she loved with all her heart. She will be lovingly remembered by her her husband for these past 55 years, Marvin of Menahga; her two daughters: Betty (Rockwell) Hizer of Oskaloosa, Iowa and Karen (Roger Sr.) Hanson of Detroit Lakes, MN; three grandchildren: Laurie (David) Dyck of Causton, BC, Canada, Rebecca (Mike) Leonard of South Carolina, and Roger (Danielle) Hanson Jr. of Valley City, ND; five great-grandchildren: JC, Ryley, Kaitlynn, Morgan, and Jackson; her sister, Sandy of Three Forks, MT and her brother, Herb of Bear Lake, MI; as well as a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Barbara was preceded in death by her parents and one great-grandson. Funeral services were held 2 PM Friday, July 11, 2014 at the Cardini-Pearson Funeral Home in Menahga. Special music selections include: "Just A Closer Walk With Thee","Dancing In The Sky", "Amazing Grace", and "I'll Fly Away". The casket bearers were: Karen Hanson, Betty Hizer, Kaitlynn Shaw, Shawn Shaw, Rebecca Leonard, and Morgan Hanson. Visitation was held from 5 to 7 PM Thursday, July 10 at the Funeral Home and for one hour prior to the service on Friday.
