Dr. Ronald E. Maertens March 22, 1932 - July 15, 2014 Dr. Ronald Edward Maertens, age 82 of Menahga, MN, formally of East Moline, IL, and Coleraine, MN, passed away St Joseph's Hospital in Park Rapids, MN Monday, July 15, 2014. Ronald was born on March 22, 1932 in Ghent, MN to Bernard and Clara (Windey) Maertens. He graduated high school and then ventured off to St Ambrose College in Rock Island IL and also the University of Iowa. Ronald enjoyed a career as a teacher, and superintendent for over thirty years serving Greenway School District for twenty seven years, and Menahga School District for three years. On June 16, 1956, Ronald was united in marriage to Gabriella "Gaye" Degraer at St. Mary's Church in Moline, IL. This union of 58 wonderful years was blessed with three children: Daniel, Cathrine, and Thomas. He loved the outdoors, and was very involved with the Assumption of Our Lady Catholic Church Choir. He spent time golfing, fishing, dancing, and stamp collecting. Ron was a long time member of Assumption of Our Lady Catholic Church in Menahga, MN. Above all, Ronald devoted his life to his precious wife and his dearly loved children and grandchildren. He will be lovingly remembered by his wife, Gabriella "Gaye" and his three children: Daniel, Cathrine, and Thomas, six grandchildren: Edward, James, Andrew, Jane, Mary, and Charles, and many nieces and nephews. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 AM on Friday, July 18, 2014 at the Assumption of Our Lady Catholic Church in Menahga, MN with the Father Arlie Sowada officiating. Ione Ellingson will serve as the organist with Mass Music led by Tim and Tom Ellingson. Casket Bearers will be Edward Maertens, James Maertens, Thomas Maertens, Daniel Maertens, William Towers and Chris Towers. A second Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 AM on July 25, 2014 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Moline, IL with the Father Chase Hilgenbrinck officiating. Organist will be Joel Limburg. Congregational Hymns will include "Come, All You Blessed Ones", "Amazing Grace", "Beautiful Savior", and "How Great Thou Art". Family and friends will serve as Casket Bearers.
