Melvin William Messer Melvin William Messer, age 90, of rural Menahga, MN passed into eternal life on Friday, August 29, 2014 at St. Joseph's Area Health Services in Park Rapids, MN. Melvin was born to Theodore and Gladys (Torgeson) Messer on January 17, 1924 in Minneapolis, MN. He graduated in June of 1941 from Edison High School and entered the Navy as a U.S. Naval Aviator in 1942. After his honorable discharge in 1945, he attended the University of Minnesota where he completed his degree in engineering in 1953. After graduation, he worked at FMC Corporation as an Engineer and retired as Manager of the Test Department. Mel was very active in the Menahga Conservation club and the Menahga Horticulture Society. He was also one of the charter members of the Fridley, MN Lions Club. Following his retirement in 1982, Mel built a log home in Rural Menahga, where he lived for the past 32 years. In 1972 he was united in marriage to Florence Olson. He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Eugene; and his beloved wife, Florence. He will be lovingly remembered by his children and step children: William Messer of Edina, Minnesota, Kristine (Richard) Besel of Worthington, MN, Robert Messer of Edina, Minnesota, Sandon Eggers of Minneapolis, Minnesota, and Jay Eggers of Minneapolis, Minnesota; six grandchildren and two great grandchildren. A memorial service will be held 11 AM Thursday, September 4, 2014 at the First English Lutheran Church in Menahga with Pastor Steve Bruer and Pastor Jim Hallaway officiating. The Urn bearer will be Mel's son, William Messer. A visitation will be held at the Church one hour prior to the service, with lunch to follow.
