Shirley M Yliniemi

SHIRLEY M. YLINIEMI March 4, 1928 - September 23, 2014 Shirley M. Yliniemi, age 86, was born on March 4, 1928 in Shelton, WA to John and Katie (Kippola) Yliniemi. A short time after her birth, she moved with her family to settle in the Toad Lake area west of Park Rapids, MN, where her parents farmed. Shirley attended the District #83 Country School near her home. She went on to attend high school in Frazee, MN, graduating with the class of 1947. Following high school, Shirley ventured to Minneapolis where she did domestic work for the Peyton family for eleven years. In 1961, she attended the Medical Institute of Minnesota where she studied the Medical Laboratory Technician Program. Following her formal education, she interned at the North Country Regional Hospital in Bemidji, MN where she enjoyed a fulfilling career in cytotechnology and histotechnology that spanned over 34 years. Shirley retired in 1995 and returned to the Park Rapids area where she helped care for young children whom she loved deeply. She always enjoyed spending time with "little people" nurturing them to be the best they could be as they grew and developed talents and skills. She also exercised her creativeness through sewing. Shirley had a strong faith in the Lord and was a long time member of the Spruce Grove Apostolic Lutheran Church near Wolf Lake, MN and had also attended the Ponsford Community Church in Ponsford, MN for a number of years. She will be loving remembered by; three sisters: Dorothy (John) Hudacek of St. Louis Park, MN, Mardell (Phil) Barlow of Park Rapids, MN, and June Yliniemi of Minneapolis, MN; her sister-in-law, Lois Yliniemi of Osage, MN, as well as many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Shirley is preceded in death by her parents; her twin brother who died at birth, and four sisters: Jean Arlene who passed at the age of six months, Laila Haataja who passed in 2002, Ethelyn Yliniemi who passed in 2004, & Mayme Smith who passed away in 2013; two brothers: John Maynard who passed in 2006, and Rueben who passed in 2008. Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Monday, September 29, 2014 at the Spruce Grove Apostolic Lutheran Church near Wolf Lake, MN with Rev. Dennis Hannu and Rev. Elmer Yliniemi officiating. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service on Monday at the church. Interment will be made at Pickerel Lake Cemetery.
