DONALD ROY MARKKULA February 9, 1933 - January 4, 2015 Donald Roy Markkula, age 81, entered his heavenly home on Sunday, January 4, 2015 while a patient at CHI St. Joseph's Area Hospital following a period of declining health. Donald was born on February 9, 1933 to John and Impi (Mursu) Markula on a farm in rural Becker County, near Menahga, MN. He was born the eldest of four children. Don attended the Menahga Public School and grew into manhood helping on his parent's farm. At the age of 18, Donald entered the United States Air Force and faithfully served his country fighting in Korea during the Korean War. After receiving his honorable discharge in October of 1955, Donald returned home to Menahga where he worked in the building construction and timber industry throughout most of his working life. He also worked for the B.F. Manufacturing Company in Minneapolis for a time. After his father's death, Donald lived with his mother and helped her live independently for many years. In 1995, due to his own failing health, Donald became a resident of the Green Pine Acres Nursing Home in Menahga where he has enjoyed being part of the community ever since. He was a faithful member of the Redeemer Lutheran Church in Menahga and always looked forward to Pastor John Ramsbacher's faithful visits. Donald was also a long time member of the Sebeka American Legion Post and the Guy L. McDermeit VFW Post in Menahga. He will be lovingly remembered by his three sisters: Shirley "Sally" Crosby, LaVerne Markula and Elaine Markula all of Minneapolis; as well as several dearly loved nieces and nephews. Donald was preceded in death by his parents. Funeral services will be held 12 Noon Tuesday, January 13, 2015 at the Redeemer Lutheran Church in Menahga, MN with Rev. John Ramsbacher officiating. Visitation will begin one hour prior to the service. Ruth Kinnunen will be the organist. Casket bearers will be members of the Sebeka American Legion Post and the Guy L. McDermeit VFW Post #6206 will provide the military honors. Interment will be made in the Menahga City Cemetery Veterans Section. The church will host a luncheon following the service for all.
