Elon Helman age 99, of Menahga, MN passed into eternity on Sunday, September 20, 2015 at the Green Pine Acres Nursing Home in Menahga with his loved ones at his side. Elon was born on May 22, 1916 to John and Anna Helman at his parent’s home near Squaw Lake, MN. As a small child of two years of age, Elon’s mother died leaving his three siblings and himself to be raised by several loving family members and Friends. As a young man, he left home to work as a lumberjack in logging camps throughout Northern MN. Later, he gained employment working for the Packard Motor Company in Detroit, MI. On December 16, 1941, Elon entered the United States Army where he bravely served his country during WWII. He served in the pacific theatre of War and fought five military campaigns throughout the central and southwest Pacific theatres of World War II as a member of the HQ CO 3rd Battalion, l6lst Infantry. He was a patriotic hero who earned the Purple Heart medal among many others. After his honorable discharge, Elon made his home in Oregon where he met and married Mayme Senia Matson on March 15, 1947. This union was blessed with three daughters: Dee, Jeanette and Donna and a step-son, Terry. The young family moved to Southern CA where they raised their four children. Elon worked as a union carpenter for over 25 years before retiring to the Menahga, MN area in 1973. Elon enjoyed the simple pleasures of life: fishing, hunting, snowmobiling, gardening, visiting with and helping others and watching the birds and wildlife that graced his property. He endured the heartache of being preceded in death by both his wife and daughter, Jeanette. Above all, Elon loved his family with all his heart. He will be lovingly remembered by his two daughters: Dee (Don) Hager of California and Donna (Wayne) Rost of Menahga; his step-son, Terry (Shirley) Helman of TN; 11 grandchildren: Amy (Dave) Hepfinger, John Hager, Josh Hager and Aaron (Chris) Mogiliski, Adam Allen, Sonya (Tony) DiFranco, Anna (Bryan) Riddle, Mark (Blanca) Barrick, Brian Barrick, Dominica and Debra Helman; 11 great grandchildren: Avrey, Agnes and Addison Mogiliski, Felicia and Vernard Berry, Grason and Olivia Riddle (twins) and Chris Corona (Blanca), Chris and Brandon (Debbie), and Shirley Ann (Dominica); l great great grandchild, Ezire Berry; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Memorial services are scheduled for 11:00 AM Saturday, June 18, 2016 at the Cardini-Pearson Funeral Home in Menahga with lunch to follow at the Menahga VFW.
