HAZEL LORRAINE CARLSON March 19, 1929 – October 9, 2017 Hazel Lorraine Carlson, age 88, a lifelong Menahga, MN area resident, peacefully passed into eternity on Monday, October 9, 2017 at the Rose Haven Assisted Living Facility in Menahga with her family at her side. Hazel was born on March 19, 1929 to Victor and Hilma (Kangas) Karkinen on the family farm located in Runeberg Township northwest of Menahga. She attended country school near her home. As a young woman, Hazel diligently helped with both the housework and farmwork. She was united in marriage to Hans Clarence Carlson on June 14, 1947. Their union was blessed with a daughter, Sharon Ann. Hazel devoted her life to making a warm and loving home for her husband and daughter. She was a wonderful cook and baker. In addition, she happily helped her husband as needed with the farm work and made hundreds of Christmas wreaths. She was a very creative person who loved to use her talents sewing, knitting or crocheting. Hazel’s life was deeply saddened and forever changed by the death of her husband, Hans in 1998. She was a longtime, faithful member of the First English Lutheran Church of Menahga. Hazel will be lovingly remembered by her daughter, Sharon (Gerry) Vorgert of Perham; her three grandchildren: Michelle (Tony) Page of Blaine, MN, Tim (Megan) Vorgert of Albertville, MN and Milissa (Chris) Hoff of Hawley, MN; five great grandchildren: Sydney, Claire, Kenna, Coleman and Madilyn; two sisters-in-law: Ellen Karkinen of Menahga and Betty Karkinen of Detroit Lakes, as well as many nieces, nephews, other relatives and her Rose Haven family who loved her dearly. She was preceded in death by her husband, Hans; her parents; her sister, Leona and two brothers: Harold and Melvin as well as many other loved ones. Funeral services were held Thursday, October 12th, 2017 at the First English Lutheran Church with Pastor Ron Beck and Pastor James Holloway officiating. Mary Hanninen was both the pianist and soloist and sang, “On Eagles Wings” and “How Great Thou Art”. The casket bearers were: Tim Vorgert, Gaylord Carlson, Dean Burkman, Chris Hoff, Dennis Koski and Jerry Feigal. Interment was made in the Alajoki Cemetery next to her husband, Hans.
