Iona Lavern Petrie

IONA LAVERN PETRIE August 12, 1931 – July 1, 2018    Iona Lavern Petrie, age 86, a long time Osage/Park Rapids, MN area resident, peacefully entered the splendor of Heaven on Sunday morning, July 1, 2018 at the Rose Haven Assisted Living Center in Menahga, MN with her loved ones at her side.    Iona was born on August 12, 1931 on the family farm near Ponsford, MN to Roscoe and Eleanora (Phelps) Stearns. She attended the Linnell Country School near her family home. She was united in marriage to Ivan Petrie on June 26, 1948. This union was blessed with six children: Mary, Margaret, Rodger, Ronald, Randy and Doug. The young family made their home in the Osage area where Iona devoted herself to making a loving home for her husband and her children. She was a wonderful cook and baker who will be long remembered for her delicious homemade fried chicken, fruit salad, spice cake and bread pudding. Each spring Iona looked forward to planting a large vegetable garden she would nurture into fruitful abundance to meet the needs of her growing family. She also enjoyed raising beautiful flowers into colorful splendor for all to see and enjoy. Iona also enjoyed feeding and watching the many humming birds, and the uninvited black bears that graced her property. She loved hosting family holidays and other gatherings which filled her home with much laughter and many wonderful memories.    Iona will be lovingly remembered by her six children: Mary (Mike) Poole of Park Rapids, MN, Margaret (Ron) Tate of Osage, Rodger (Becky) Petrie of Osage, Ronald (Sue) Petrie of Dorset, Randy (Judy) Petrie of Brainerd and Douglas (Kim) Petrie of Park Rapids, MN; 16 grandchildren; 44 great grandchildren and 4 great-great grandchildren; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.    Iona was preceded in death by her dearly loved husband, Ivan in 2002; her two brothers: Boyd and Warren and her two sisters: Idella and Loretta.    Funeral services will be held 2 PM Saturday, July 7, 2018 at the Jones-Pearson Funeral Home in Park Rapids with the Reverend James Neubauer officiating. The organist will be Sarah Kaufenberg and the soloist will be son-in-law, Mike Poole who will sing: “The Lord’s Prayer”, “Amazing Grace” and “The Old Rugged Cross”. Jennifer Petrie will join Mike in singing “The Lord’s Prayer”. The casket bearers will be Iona’s 16 grandchildren. Interment will be made next to her husband, Ivan in the Linnell Cemetery of Osage, MN. Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 PM Friday, July 6, 2018 at the Jones Pearson Funeral Home in Park Rapids and will continue on Saturday beginning one hour prior to the service.
